Quote of the day by Cillian Murphy: 'Believe your instincts. Instinct, instinct, instinct over intellect. Always instinct. Just because you can rationalise it doesn't mean it's right. If you feel it, then it's right.'

Cillian Murphy does not do anything the expected way. Academy Award winner, the man behind Tommy Shelby and Robert Oppenheimer, he has spent two decades building one of the most respected bodies of work in modern cinema, always on his own terms and always with something real behind the eyes. The Cork-born actor does not fill the silence, does not reach for the safe answer and does not say what people want to hear. He once said something that cut straight through everything else he has ever been asked.

Quote of the day by Cillian Murphy

“Believe your instincts. Instinct, instinct, instinct over intellect. Always instinct. Just because you can rationalise it doesn’t mean it’s right. If you feel it, then it’s right.”The SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations podcast posted on February 2, 2024 asked Cillian Murphy what advice he would give to his 21-year-old self. He paused for a moment and said, “I don’t know, I would have said just persevere and actually believe your instincts. Instinct, instinct, instinct over intellect. Always instinct. Just because you can rationalise it doesn’t mean it’s right. If you feel it then it’s right. That’s what I really strongly believe so I would have told my 21-year-old self that.”No script. No polish. Just a man thinking out loud and landing on something that felt completely real. He abandoned a law degree to pursue acting. Every major decision in his career has the fingerprint of instinct all over it. And every single one of them paid off.

What does the quote by Cillian Murphy actually mean?

Most people have felt it. The moment where everything in you is pointing one way but the logical argument is pointing another. The opportunity that feels wrong even though it looks right on paper. And so you override the feeling, talk yourself into the sensible option and spend years wondering why something that made perfect sense on paper never quite felt right. What Cillian Murphy is saying is that the feeling was never the unreliable part, the rationalisation was. The instinct, the thing that arrives before the argument does, that is the part that actually knows. Murphy abandoned law for acting because something told him to. Every role he has taken since has had that same fingerprint all over it.There is a reason this quote resonates far beyond the world of acting. It speaks to the scientist who had a hunch the data could not yet support. The entrepreneur who backed an idea everyone around them called too risky. The person who walked away from something comfortable because something in them knew it was not right. Instinct is not recklessness. It is the accumulated weight of everything you have absorbed, processed and understood before your conscious mind has caught up. Cillian Murphy has simply been listening to it his entire career.

Cillian Murphy’s best on-screen performances

Every role Cillian Murphy has chosen has been a masterclass in picking the thing that feels right over the thing that looks safe. In ’28 Days Later’ he played a man waking up to a world that had collapsed overnight, a performance of raw, wide-eyed vulnerability that announced him as someone entirely different from what cinema had seen before. In ‘Batman Begins’ he took a villain role that most actors would have treated as a paycheck and turned it into something genuinely unsettling. Scarecrow was not supposed to be the most memorable thing in that film. Then came Tommy Shelby. Six series of ‘Peaky Blinders’ and a performance so sustained, so layered and so completely controlled that it became one of the defining television roles of the last decade. He barely raised his voice across the entire run. He did not need to. Every scene he walked into shifted around him. That is not technique. That is presence. And then ‘Oppenheimer’. Christopher Nolan’s most ambitious film resting almost entirely on Murphy’s shoulders, a portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2024 and left critics searching for new ways to describe what they had just watched. He carried the weight of an entire era through stillness, through restraint, through the thing he chose not to show. Every single one of those choices was instinct. Every single one of them was right.

Who is Cillian Murphy?

Born in Douglas, Cork in 1976, Cillian Murphy studied law at University College Cork before abandoning it entirely to pursue acting, a decision that turned out to be one of the great instinct-led choices in modern cinema history. According to IMDb, he first gained widespread international attention with ’28 Days Later’ in 2002 before going on to star in ‘Batman Begins’, ‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley’, ‘Inception’ and ‘Peaky Blinders’, the latter making him one of the most recognised and celebrated actors on television across the globe. In 2024 he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for ‘Oppenheimer’, a performance that cemented his place among the finest actors of his generation. He left law for acting because something told him to. He has trusted that voice ever since and the body of work speaks entirely for itself.
