Director Vasanthabalan slams 'Kashmir Files' and 'Dhurandhar': 'Hate is being spread in a planned way through cinema'
Filmmaker Vasanthabalan has strongly criticized recent movies. He stated that films like ‘Kashmir Files’ and ‘Dhurandhar’ are spreading hate in a planned way. Vasanthabalan believes cinema should unite people, not divide them. Director Vetri Maaran also made indirect comments against hate politics in films. The discussion highlights the responsibility of filmmakers in shaping public opinion through their work.

Director Vasanthabalan, known for his acclaimed works ‘Veyil’ and ‘Angadi Theru,’ recently gave an impactful address on the effects of cinema and media on society at the trailer launch event of the film ‘Neelira’ held in Chennai. He recalled how television once shaped public thinking, mentioning the impact of early shows like the Ramayana telecast. According to him, such content slowly created strong emotional and social narratives that spread widely across the country.

During his speech, Vasanthabalan strongly criticised films that promote division and hatred. As per News 18, he said, “From the time Ramayana was telecast across India, certain ideas started spreading widely.” He further added, “Be it ‘Kashmir Files’ or now ‘Dhurandhar’, hate is being spread in a planned way.” His words highlighted concerns about how cinema can be used to influence public opinion negatively. He stressed that films should bring people together rather than divide them.

The event also saw filmmaker Vetri Maaran indirectly criticising Dhurandhar for promoting hate politics. He pointed out that some films focus on violence and propaganda for commercial success. Both his comments and Vasanthabalan’s statements created an interesting discussion on the responsibility of filmmakers. Both directors emphasised the need for meaningful cinema that reflects the truth rather than spreading negativity.

‘Neelira’ plot and cast

‘Neelira,’ directed by Somitharan, is set to release in theatres on April 3. The film is based on the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, and it looks at the story through the eyes of an ordinary citizen who is caught up in this emotional war. Love, fear, and struggle become characters themselves as they depict the impact of war on the family.
