That challenge becomes even harder when the earlier films are considered modern classics. ‘Drishyam 3’ tries hard to continue the legacy created by the first two parts, but this time the familiar formula no longer carries the same excitement. The original films worked because viewers never knew Georgekutty’s next move. In the third installment, however, the audience already understands the franchise’s style and rhythm, making many twists feel expected instead of shocking.
Jeethu Joseph revisits familiar ground with Georgekutty again
Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film once again follows Georgekutty, played by Mohanlal. He is now living peacefully, producing films, and searching for a groom for his elder daughter. Yet the past, as usual, refuses to leave his family alone. While the plot seems intriguing at first glance, the first part of the film drags on for far too long, revisiting familiar emotions and scenarios that the viewers have encountered before. The film takes forever to reach its climax, stretching out in many areas. Even though Jeethu Joseph tries hard to create suspense following the interval, it does not succeed as much as the other two movies in creating an impact.Meta references and twists are fun to watch, but not very impactfulAnother interesting thing about the movie is its self-awareness. It is interesting how Georgekutty creates his own movie named ‘Drishyam’ by claiming it as a remake. There are also some witty remarks only the hardcore audience can grasp, like the one about the protagonist looking similar to Ajay Devgn from the Hindi version of the movie. This adds a breath of fresh air to the narrative. Nevertheless, the problem still lies in the lack of originality in the storytelling process. Because of that familiarity, many of the twists no longer create the same tension or emotional payoff that made the earlier films unforgettable.
Mohanlal remains strong, but ‘Drishyam 3’ feels unnecessary
Despite the film’s shortcomings, Mohanlal once again delivers a controlled and convincing performance as Georgekutty. His screen presence and emotional restraint continue to hold the film together. The climax does attempt to surprise viewers, and a few moments still manage to spark curiosity. However, at nearly two hours and thirty-seven minutes, the film feels longer than needed. In the end, ‘Drishyam 3’ comes across less like a gripping continuation and more like a franchise trying to outsmart its own legacy. The first two films stayed ahead of the audience at every step. This time, the audience seems to be one step ahead of the film itself.
