Eric Dane, beloved for his roles as Dr Mark Sloan, and nicknamed “McSteamy” on the hit medical drama series ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, passed away on Friday. He was 53. News of his demise comes just a year after he announced his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Dane’s ALS diagnosis was made public in April 2025, after which, he spent his final months advocating for awareness and research.

He first joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 and became a fan favourite, with his character’s storyline and charm leaving a lasting impact on the series that is still running on tv. Though his character was later killed off following a plane crash on the show, his legacy endured, contributing to the renaming of the fictional hospital to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
