Marvel star Tom Holland opens up about dyslexia, ‘petrifying’ cue cards and not hosting 'Saturday Night Live': 'I can freeze'

Over the years, ‘Spider-Man’ actor Tom Holland has been quite open about his dyslexia and how it has affected him. In a recent report, the actor even opened up about having to reject roles on ‘Saturday Night Live’ because of this.

Tom Holland on why he has never hosted ‘SNL’

While featuring on the latest episode of the ‘Good Hang’ podcast, the actor talked to ‘SNL’ veteran Amy Poehler about never having done the show. He opened up about how his dyslexia has hindered one of the opportunities he has been offered in the past. “I’m heavily dyslexic, which is one of the reasons why, and I’d love to talk to you today about it, actually. I’ve never done SNL,” he said, admitting that even though he has been asked on multiple occasions to host the show, he has always been scared of doing it because of the dialogue cards. For the unversed, the crew sets up dialogue cards alongside the camera for celebrity guests to ensure that the skits are performed seamlessly. Citing trouble reading the cards, Holland added, “I’m just so petrified at the concept of trying to read something and they change. I can read fine but when I have to read out loud, it just becomes like a mental block, and I can freeze.”Even though he has not been able to do the show, he believes that it follows a great concept and “the idea of having fun and making a fool of yourself in such a creative way”, is appealing to him.

How Tom Holland deals with all of this in his career

Holland also weighed in on how he deals with this in his everyday life and how he makes sure to learn his lines properly before read-throughs. “Like at the read-through, I will try and highlight everything and learn my lines ahead of time so that I am more skimming it than I am reading it”, he added on.

Tom Holland praised for being open about dyslexia

While talking to the BBC, Kay Carter from The Dyslexia Association, also praised Holland on his openness about dyslexia and how important it is to start conversations around the matter. She added, “That kind of honesty really helps others feel seen and understood,” further citing that the actor was genuinely brave for his words. On the work front, Tom Holland is all set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Oddysey’, as well as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ later this year.
