Quote of the day by Dean Martin: ‘I want to be remembered as a damn good entertainer...who made people enjoy themselves and laugh a little’

Dean Martin was one of the biggest icons of the Hollywood industry. He had excelled in both acting and singing, and was known as one of the trend setters of his era. Even after almost 30 years of his passing, Martin is well remembered for his on screen characters, along with his laid-back and confident personality.

Quote of the day by Dean Martin

“I want to be remembered as a damn good entertainer, nothing spectacular. A good entertainer who made people enjoy themselves and made them laugh a little. I want them to think ‘He was a nice guy. He did pretty good and we loved him.'”This quote from the veteran actor Dean Martin is from an old interview, which is included in his biography, ‘Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams’, which was released in 1992. While he was best known for his ‘drunk and lazy’ stage persona, Martin opened up about what he hoped to see in life, even long after he was gone.

What does the quote mean?

Dean Martin was always known to have a laid back persona and idea about being an actor. More often than not, he would convey that he did consider himself an icon or a mega star, he simply wished for people to view him as someone who did his job well enough to be liked. He said, “I want to be remembered as a damn good entertainer, nothing spectacular”, citing that the stardom did not matter to him as much as it did to fulfill the main point of acting; to entertain others. That was one of the only things that he wished to be remembered by. Further on, he talks about how critical acclaim or awards did not dictate his success and pride, but the immediate emotional response of his audience did matter a lot more to him.He was revered as one of the most simple actors of his time, and was quite down to earth. He concluded his quote by adding, “I want them to think ‘He was a nice guy. He did pretty good and we loved him.’” He cited that he wanted his performances to touch people’s hearts enough so that they remember him for how he made them feel, and that they love him for his performance on screen, for a job well done.Dean Martin’s down-to-earth thoughts teach us to look beyond the glitz and glamour, and instead simply focus on doing a good job at what we do. Rather than focusing on materialistic achievements, it is best to be present with yourself, be comfortable in your own skin, and be confident in yourself and your skills.
