‘Sitting with Rs 120 crore loss’: Producer KJR Rajesh breaks silence over Sivakarthikeyan's ‘Hero’ and ‘Ayalaan’

Producers lead a notoriously tough life in the film industry, and Kotapadi J. Rajesh (KJR) has just made a shocking disclosure about the staggering amount of money he has lost over the last few years. The producer, who is set to make his acting debut in the upcoming film Angikaaram, revealed that he is currently facing losses close to ₹120 crore. Explaining how he ended up in such severe financial distress after investing in various high-profile projects, Rajesh candidly detailed the series of blows his production house suffered.

How Kotapadi J Rajesh’s planned recovery strategy took a different turn

Discussing the matter in an interview with Galatta Plus, Kotapadi J. Rajesh stated, “Hero, Doctor, and Ayalaan were not originally my production projects. They belonged to 24 AM Studios, and I took them over when they faced financial issues. Sivakarthikeyan and I shared a good relationship, and I believed we could complete a few films together to recover the losses. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned, and I got stuck in the process.”He further added, “I entered the arrangement with an existing debt of Rs. 90 crore. We had planned to clear it through multiple projects before 2020. But today, after everything that has transpired, I am sitting with a total loss of Rs. 120 crore.” His candid admission has quickly become a major talking point within the film industry.

When strong content could not deliver the expected results for KJR

Speaking about the performance of Hero, Rajesh admitted that the film did not connect with audiences despite having strong content. “Hero was a major flop, even though it had a good story. At that time, people were not ready to accept that kind of film. Some felt it was similar to Gentleman, and many viewers did not like the fact that Sivakarthikeyan’s character did not fight in the movie,” he explained.Rajesh also spoke about the sci-fi film ‘Ayalaan,’ noting that the film’s prolonged delays added significant financial pressure. According to him, he and Sivakarthikeyan were supposed to offset previous losses by collaborating on future projects. However, rapidly accumulating interest and growing debt made the situation far more difficult than anticipated.

COVID-19 delays increased Rajesh’s financial woes

Rajesh explained that the coronavirus pandemic was the reason why they suffered such heavy financial losses. “For ‘Hero’ alone, the refund was of about Rs 30 crores. Then came the coronavirus that impacted both ‘Doctor’ and ‘Ayalaan’. Everything got delayed for about three years. By the time work resumed, the interest had increased substantially,” he said.Despite hailing from a banking background, Rajesh admitted that he underestimated the scale of the financial risks involved. He also disclosed that Sivakarthikeyan’s loss stands at around Rs 55 crore. While two more projects remain pending between them, KJ Rajesh said he is unsure whether those films will eventually take shape. His candid remarks have helped to highlight the financial truths that often get obscured behind the glamor associated with the movie industry.
