Ever imagined incense smoke rising through icy chilled air and Sanskrit chants echoing in sub-zero temperatures? This is Okunevo for you. Far from the madding crowd, deep in the frozen wilderness of Siberia lies a small hamlet that looks completely different from traditional Russia in terms of culture and belief. In Okunevo, a small village in Russia, travellers will find ancient Hindu temples. The mornings here begin with the chants of “Hare Krishna”. The sacred ‘OM’ symbols painted across walls of spiritual spaces look auspicious. Here locals start their days with yoga and devotional gatherings, all while temperatures dip to nearly -40°C, making Okunevo the world’s coldest Hindu Village.Let’s find out more about this Hindu village. The viral video The village went viral after travel content creator @indigotrekker23 from India shared several videos on his Instagram and YouTube channels showing this interesting place. In the video, one can see snow-covered roads, wooden homes, and frozen rivers. But that’s not what shocks, it’s the sight of saffron-clad devotees, Shiva temples, and bhajans which has taken the world by surprise. Indian spiritual traditions reached one of the coldest corners of Earth.Location and traditionsOkunevo is situated some 240 km north of the city of Omsk in western Siberia. But what surprises the most is the Omkar Siva Dham Ashram here which was established in the 1990s. There is also a Krishna temple connected with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Travellers can hear devotional chants and spiritual rituals happening here.Travellers find Okunevo’s vibe intriguing because this is not an ordinary Russian village. This village feels remote, mystical, and spiritual. Some researchers are also studying the region and describe it as a “place of power” that attracts curious and offbeat travellers from across the globe. As per locals, the village caught global attention in the early 1990s after spiritual followers connected the area with ancient Vedic beliefs. What’s for travellersFor travellers, it’s an experience of a lifetime where they can see the surreal cultural contrast. Siberia is usually associated with rare wildlife, brutal cold, dense forests and endless snowfields. But Okunevo looks like a dream, a beauty, a hope in the freezing cold weather. Best time to visitSummers are beautiful here. From June to August, temperatures are milder. Forests turn green. The Tara River flowing near the village creates an otherworldly atmosphere. And therefore the summer season is considered the best time to explore the beauty of the place. How to Reach

By Air: Travellers can fly into Omsk from major Russian cities like Moscow or Saint Petersburg. By Road: From Omsk, Okunevo is about a 4–5 hour drive. Shared taxis and regional buses are available. But options are limited in winters.Because the village is remote, travellers should plan accommodation and transport in advance. Winter visitors especially need proper thermal clothing, insulated boots, and proper weather preparation.Okunevo is still raw, underrated, unusual, and deeply spiritual and that’s exactly what makes it special. For Indian travellers, the emotional and spiritual connection is fascinating.
