Woman faces 4 months in prison, probation, after posting malicious content against IU

A social media user was earlier arrested for posting content of a malicious nature against IU. Now, according to the latest reports, officials gave the person a stricter sentence after finding that she showed no remorse for her actions against the singer and actress. Here is what we know about the matter so far.

Woman arrested for posting hateful content about IU receives a strict sentence

Star News reported that the court gave a strict sentence to the woman convicted of posting hateful comments about IU. On May 31, 2026, the Seoul Central District Court’s appellate division gave her a suspended prison term for criminal insult, meaning she will serve a 4-month prison sentence.Additionally, the court also ruled that she will remain suspended for one year and will also serve 80 hours of community service. The sentence also included a one-year probation period. The sentence was initially limited to a fine, ordering the person to pay 3 million KRW. However, her case was then merged with another one. The second case was also involved separate malicious content that she had posted online. It was ruled that her comments and posts “exceeded the level of criticism that could be considered socially acceptable.”According to the report, comments often described her using words like ‘fraud’ and ‘mentally ill’. She also targeted her agency and commented phrases such as “Did you bribe the judge?”She was also cited as a repeat offender, noting she continued posting comments even after being apprehended. However, her diagnosis of intractable epilepsy was taken into account as well while serving her the sentence. She had also deleted the comments later on, which was also another factor that was considered.Disclaimer: This report is a journalistic account of a recent court development. The final ruling, which will be published by the court, is the definitive source of information.
