Russia has attacked Kyiv and energy sites across Ukraine, injuring residents and damaging power facilities, according to an Al Jazeera report.
What Ukraine says
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X that Russia launched 172 drones and 36 ballistic missiles, including KN-23 missiles that he said were made and supplied by North Korea. Ukraine intercepted only four of the 36 missiles. He said substations were hit in five regions and that Kyiv faces serious problems with electricity, water and heat. He also said there is a shortage of Patriot interceptors and urged the US to increase aid.
Authorities said the attacks killed at least two people across Ukraine and wounded about a dozen others.
In Kyiv
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the overnight strikes damaged energy facilities and a key bridge, and described the energy situation as extremely difficult. Debris hit a five-storey apartment building in a western district, and the facade of another residential building was damaged.
Russia’s statement
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said it struck military-industrial, energy and transport facilities in and around Kyiv.
Talks planned
US-brokered talks between Moscow and Kyiv were due to open in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The last such round was held in February 2026. Zelenskyy said Russia is increasing strikes on energy infrastructure to build leverage before the talks. US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a deal could be near after meeting Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Another deadly strike
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said on Friday that at least 50 people were killed when Russia bombed an aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhia region, one of the deadliest strikes on civilians this year.
