An Indian ship captain, Ajay Pant, has been charged in the United Kingdom over an alleged breach of Russia-related sanctions, as per an Al Jazeera report. He has not been sentenced.
What is alleged
The tanker MT Smyrtos left Paradip in India on 25 April. It was intercepted in the English Channel on 14 June by Royal Marines. UK authorities say the vessel is part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”, which carries oil outside normal Western sanctions rules. Captain Pant has been charged with a sanctions breach, which can carry up to 10 years in prison.
Where the case stands
Bail has been denied and a trial is expected. The report did not mention any response from the Indian government.
Reactions
The International Transport Workers’ Federation and the group Human Rights at Sea have commented on the case. Maritime law expert David Hammond described the situation as a “perfect storm” for seafarers who follow orders on ships whose ownership chains are complicated.
Why it matters
The case highlights the risk faced by crews on vessels linked to sanctioned trade. A charge is not a conviction, and the court will decide the facts.
