India Publishes First Monthly Jobs Survey: April 2025 Unemployment is 5.1%

New Delhi, May 15, 2025 — In a significant change in monitoring the labour market, India has released its first monthly jobs survey, hoping to give employment trends a more contemporary perspective. The figures for April 2025 show the overall unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above at 5.1% nationwide.

Major Highlights from the April 2025 Job Survey:

Urban-Rural Divide:
The urban sector witnessed a larger unemployment rate at 6.5%, while rural areas experienced 4.5%. This indicates sharper joblessness among urban populations, perhaps a result of tepid formal sector growth and lesser informal employment opportunities.

Young Unemployment High:
Among the population between 15 and 29 years old, the unemployment rate was at a worrying 13.8%. In this category, unemployment rates among urban youth were much higher at 17.2%, while rural youth unemployment was 12.3%.

Gender Trends:
The unemployment level among men was marginally higher at 5.2%, while women had a rate of 5.0%. The marginal difference is an indication of progress coupled with ongoing gender imbalance in terms of participation in the labor force.

Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR):
The total LFPR for those 15 years and older was 55.6%. Rural regions showed a higher participation rate of 58.0%, whereas that in urban areas was 50.7%.

Worker Population Ratio (WPR):
The country’s WPR, measuring the percentage of the employed working population, was 52.8%. Rural regions once more did better with a 55.4% ratio, against 47.4% in urban regions.

This monthly employment statistics is likely to be influential in making timely economic choices and labour policies. Through its shift from less frequent reporting, the government hopes to better reflect short-term directions in the labour market and tackle rising trends with responsiveness.
